Nearing one of the biggest fights of his professional career, Bellator 36's Patricky Freire got some of the worst news possible. Ivan Canello, who had been Freire's manager but also his very close friend, died suddenly earlier this week at age 32. It was a jarring emotional blow to the 25-year-old Freire. "First of all, I was very sad," Freire wrote in an e-mail to MMAjunkie.com. "Then I thought, I have to be strong. I have to train to win - because Ivan would be proud."

LEMOORE, Calif. -- Saturday night at the Tachi Palace, Bellator’s fourth season got underway as four welterweights advanced to the semifinals of the promotion’s 170-pound tournament. However, the quarterfinals were not without controversy. Tournament favorite Jay Hieron didn’t need long to defeat Anthony Lapsley and advance in the Bellator tournament tournament, but the win was marred by an awkward, premature stoppage.

For the undefeated Chris Lozano, holding back is going to be the toughest part of Bellator's season-four welterweight tournament. He gets to use just about all the weapons in his arsenal: kicks, punches, knees and a myriad of submissions he keeps for special occasions. But perhaps his favorite tool, or at least one he said comes naturally to him, is off-limits. Per Bellator's tournament rules, he can't use elbows unless he makes the tournament finals. And he loves them, particularly the ones of the spinning variety. If he has his way, Lozano will dust them off just in time to teach Jay Hieron a lesson in respect.
