Carlos Condit, Killer Instinct and the Art of the Third-Round Comeback (6/14/2010 6:38:55 AM)
Filed under: UFCMixed martial arts is a sport so new that good statistics aren't readily available for many scenarios worth examining. But watching for years gives you the ability to make general observations, and one of them is the conclusion that fighters that lose both of the first two rounds of a bout rarely come back to finish an opponent in the third. There are multiple reasons for this, but the most simple one is that if Fighter A was good enough to control the action for 10 minutes, the possibility of Fighter B turning it around and finishing him sometime in the last five is probably not good. And that is part of what makes Carlos Condit's comeback win over Rory MacDonald at UFC 115 so outstanding.

Condit got up again, but just after the midway point of the first round MacDonald put Condit on his back for the third time. MacDonald ended the first round with one more takedown, and the fans in Vancouver were cheering for the local favorite. VANCOUVER, British Columbia - While the $85,000 bonus check Rory MacDonald received for his "Fight of the Night" performance at UFC 115 probably helped chase away the blues that accompanied his first professional MMA loss, it did little to silence the 17,000 angered fans at GM Place. With MacDonald absorbing shot after shot from opponent Carlos Condit, referee Kevin Dornan made the unpopular decision of stopping the fight with just seven seconds left in a contest the Canadian youngster seemed assured of no less than a draw result. UFC president Dana White said the timing of the ending was unfortunate, but he backed the referee's decision completely.
