Chael Sonnen Wins War of Words, Anderson Silva Focused on Performance (7/28/2010 7:30:30 AM)
Filed under: UFC, NewsIf you catch Anderson Silva on the right day, he can be smiling and happy and have plenty to say about his fight career, where it's been and where it's going. Tuesday was not one of those days. On a conference call to promote August 7's UFC 117 middleweight championship match against No. 1 contender Chael Sonnen, Silva was quiet and reserved, and even though you couldn't see his face, it was easy to imagine a look of disinterest or annoyance at the questions fired his way. Sonnen on the other hand, continued his one-man crusade to sell the event as a must-see war and Silva as a champion on the verge of collapse. In a series of alternately amusing and serious monologues, Sonnen trashed the champ's drawing power and declared himself the superior fighter. UFC 117's Chael Sonnen: "Dummy" Anderson Silva doesn't know how to promote (7/28/2010 1:00:00 AM)
It took a while, but UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva opened up and said his piece. After a string of one-word answers and an apparent lack of interest in promoting his UFC 117 headliner against Chael Sonnen, Silva said he simply differs with the trash-talking challenger on how to sell a fight. "I just don't choose to promote the fight like that," Silva told MMAjunkie.com.

After emulating Chael Sonnen, Mario Miranda ready to watch him pay at UFC 117 (7/20/2010 7:00:00 PM)
While UFC middleweight Mario Miranda picked up his first win in the octagon at June's UFC 115 event, he's had little time to relax and savor the moment. After all, you don't say no when UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is asking for help. Miranda recently returned home to Washington after spending time at the famed Black House camp in Los Angeles where he did his best Chael Sonnen impersonation in order to help Silva prep for their UFC 117 title fight.

Vitor Belfort's Camp Not Sweating Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen (7/19/2010 9:37:07 AM)
Filed under: Affliction, UFC It's been more than a year since UFC President Dana White first identified Vitor Belfort as the man who could dethrone middleweight champion Anderson Silva. That was in June of 2009, when Belfort was preparing to fight on an Affliction card that never happened, and Silva was preparing to fight Forrest Griffin after sleepwalking through a win over Thales Leites. Now Silva is preparing to fight Chael Sonnen after sleepwalking through a win over Demian Maia, and Belfort is recovering from a shoulder injury that prevented him from fighting Silva and allowed both Maia and Sonnen to leapfrog him in the UFC's middleweight hierarchy. But Belfort is back to training after shoulder surgery, and in his training camp, the focus is on fighting Silva.
In Dan Henderson, Anderson Silva Has Beaten a Better Version of Chael Sonnen (7/16/2010 5:40:09 AM)
Filed under: UFC UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has generally kept a low profile over the last couple months and let Chael Sonnen take the lead in hyping their August 7 fight. Sonnen has delivered on the hype department, making a bunch of preposterous and at times offensive comments about the champion. The UFC has now released a video in which Silva responds to some of Sonnen's statement, and although Silva does blast Sonnen for the "idiotic things coming out of his mouth," the more interesting comment from Silva is the substantive analysis he makes of Sonnen as a wrestler. While Sonnen claims that Silva will struggle against an opponent with his wrestling skills, Silva otes that in Dan Henderson, he's already beaten someone better.

Sonnen Says Words of Wisdom from the No. 1 Contender (7/13/2010 9:01:00 AM)
Thomas Gerbasi, UFC - On August 7th, one of the most intriguing and quotable fighters in recent memory - number one middleweight contender Chael Sonnen - gets his dream fight: a title bout against longtime champion Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 117. It will be the culmination of months of verbal jabs thrown by Sonnen, and before we assume that he has pulled out all the stops just for this fight, let's revisit some of the Oregonian's best quotes from the past few years.
How Much of His Own Schtick Does Chael Sonnen Actually Believe? (7/12/2010 11:38:02 AM)
Filed under: UFCI'll say this for Chael Sonnen - the guy knows how to follow through on a plan. Even when the plan calls for him to be completely obnoxious - perhaps especially then - Sonnen sticks to it. He sees it through to the end. Maybe he even enjoys it. Consider his successful bid for a title fight at UFC 117 with middleweight champ Anderson Silva. The plan called for winning some tough fights (beating Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt in the span of about four months is more than most men could do), but it also called for a campaign of verbal warfare that would make Apollo Creed blush.
Ed Soares on UFC 117's Chael Sonnen: "Before the fight, everyone has a mouth" (7/7/2010 12:45:00 PM)
While UFC 117 is still more than four weeks away, the build-up for the main event of the Aug. 7 card in Oakland, Calif., has already reached epic proportions. Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen started his trash-talk campaign in April when he professed his doubt that champion Anderson Silva would even have the courage to sign a bout agreement for the event, and he's since questioned everything from Silva's manhood to the credentials of his training partners. Silva's manager, Ed Soares, said he doesn't take offense at Sonnen's attacks, even though he's been targeted in some of the tirades. Instead, Soares simply hopes Sonnen is training with the same intensity he's talking.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - In a supposed four-year campaign for the UFC middleweight belt, contender Chael Sonnen has cast a lot of stones in the direction of current 185-pound title-holder Anderson Silva. And a Friday appearance at a UFC Fight Club Q&A session at GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, gave him free reign to trash the champion - with often hilarious results. But Sonnen, a man whose political aspirations have prompted him to run for the Oregon Legislative Assembly, risked an unpopular stance when he cast a stone at the Olympic aspirations of a Canadian hero, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

MONTREAL - With any fighter in any division, looking beyond that competitor's next matchup is never a safe thing to do. That's true even with the seemingly unbeatable UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who faces top contender Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 in August. But when you're 11-0 in the UFC, a different set of rules tends to apply. And while UFC president Dana White believes Sonnen may prove Silva's toughest test in recent memory, he does have an idea of where a win would take "The Spider."

When he's been in this position when these types of fights have happened, he's been against real good jiu jitsu guys, guys who want to get the fight to the ground. Well, Chael Sonnen is going to want to take this fight to the ground, but he's going to double-leg him and bring him down."

That was before he became a middleweight contender in the UFC. "Now, I knock on the door, they open it up and say, 'Chael! What are you doing here?'" Sonnen today told MMAjunkie.com. While his current bid for House District 37 has proved to be much more work than he imagined, he has no intention of giving up until he wins two campaigns: one for Oregon state representative and the other for the UFC's 185-pound title.

Matt Lindland says training partner Chael Sonnen is finally paying attention (2/10/2010 1:35:00 AM)
Matt Lindland, 39, considers Chael Sonnen a friend and brother as well as a training partner. The two middleweights have sweat and bled together for many years, beginning in the days when Team Quest was a used-car lot with a gym in the back. While Lindland has shared in Sonnen's successes, he - along with many fans - has also seen his friend fall short of his potential and lose out on several opportunities. At this past Saturday's UFC 109 event, that finally changed.

After dominating anointed contender Nate Marquardt at UFC 109 on Feb. 6, Sonnen talked up his donor and picked a fight with someone across the aisle. "I hope Anderson (Silva) wins (at UFC 112) because I think Vitor (Belfort) is a lot tougher fighter," Sonnen said after UFC 109. "If I had to choose between the two, I'm going to take the low road and take the easier opponent to the championship."
Chael Sonnen Follows Blueprint of Trash Talk, Cage Success to Title Shot (2/9/2010 8:39:00 AM)
by Mike ChiappettaFiled under: UFC, NewsJust days ago, Chael Sonnen was ripping Anderson Silva for wearing earrings and pink shirts, and "pretending that he doesn't speak English." He was calling him "a bum" and saying he'd really rip into the champ after he beat Nate Marquardt after UFC 109. The rest of us couldn't help but ask if the guy was crazy. Not only was he trash-talking the man who many consider the pound-for-pound MMA king (Sonnen also takes exception to that), but he also basically promised a win over Marquardt? Ridiculous, some thought. But the man with the golden mouth has the last word. He's had plenty to say about Silva, and now -- as the sudden and surprising No. 1 contender for the belt that Silva has owned since 2006 -- he'll have plenty of time to think about possibly fighting him.Chael Sonnen Follows Blueprint of Trash Talk, Cage Success to Title Shot originally appeared on MMA Fighting on Tue, 09 Feb 2010 08:39:00 EST . Chael Sonnen Finally Has Our Attention; Now Can He Beat Marquardt? (2/4/2010 6:32:00 PM)
by Mike ChiappettaFiled under: UFC, NewsChael Sonnen has spent the last few days making headlines with his mouth, but now that he's got our attention, he'll have the chance to impress us without saying another word. Sonnen gets that chance on Saturday, and it's the opportunity of a lifetime. In Thursday's UFC 109 press conference, UFC President Dana White said that the winner of the fight between Sonnen and opponent Nate Marquardt will get the next crack at the middleweight title. Some would say that Sonnen (24-10) probably doesn't deserve to be in this position. Though he does have an excellent 9-2 record over his last 11 matches, he's 2-1 in the UFC and was tapped out by Demian Maia in less than three minutes. While his decision wins over Dan Miller and Yushin Okami were solid victories against seasoned veterans, they failed to rally the masses to his side. In fact, his last fight against Okami didn't even make the main card, relegated to undercard status. As he's learned, sometimes

Chuck Mindenhall, UFC - How far has Chael Sonnen come? Eight years ago, on a desert reservation called Anza, somewhere in the middle of California between the barren outposts of Cathedral City and Borrego Springs, Sonnen stepped in the cage for the first time as a professional. We use the word professional loosely, because what ensued that day against Jason "Mayhem" Miller could be more rightly called a "fiasco."

Demian Maia To Face Chael Sonnen At UFC 95 (12/30/2008 10:23:26 AM)
According to his official website, UFC middleweight Demian Maia will next face off against Team Quest product Chael Sonnen at UFC 95, slated for London, England on February 21st. A highly decorated grappler, undefeated Demian Maia (9-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) most recently choked out Nate Quarry in the first round of their meeting at UFC 91 this past November. Prior to that, Maia took out Ryan Jensesn, Ed Herman and Jason MacDonald, all via submission. Maia has already racked up three "submission of the night" honors out of his four UFC bouts. A veteran of Pancrase, the UFC and BodogFight, Chael Sonnen (21-9 MMA, 1-2 UFC) returns to the UFC after competing in their sister promotion, the WEC, for his past three bouts. Known for his strong wrestling acumen, Sonnen last fought and defeated WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho via unanimous decision. The bout was supposed to be for the WEC middleweight title, however opponent Paulo Filho notably failed to make weight forcing a non-title match.

Sonnen defeated Filho via unanimous decision on Wednesday at WEC 36 in a bizarre and boring bout that was to be for the title before Filho missed weight by a staggering seven pounds forcing the fight to be re-booked as a three-round, non-title contest. True to his pre-fight promise to give the belt to Sonnen if he emerged victorious, Filho, who peaked on the middleweight rankings at number two behind Anderson Silva, will relinquish the now-defunct title to Sonnen. The title was set to be abolished following the matchup anyways, making the move nothing more than a ceremonial gesture.
