New UFC champ Dominick Cruz: I'm on another level than Urijah Faber (12/17/2010 10:25:00 AM)
GLENDALE, Ariz. - For 25 minutes, Dominick Cruz made Scott Jorgensen look like anything but the top contender for the UFC's first-ever bantamweight title. Cruz out-struck, out-wrestled, out-shucked and out-jived Jorgensen on the way to a lopsided unanimous-decision win that further cemented the champ's claim to be the world's top 135-pounder. And soon after the win, Cruz made little attempt to play the "whatever the UFC brings me" card. Instead, Cruz knows exactly what he wants: Urijah Faber.

LAS VEGAS - For the most part, fight-week open workout sessions are a relatively uneventful appointment. Week after week, fighters come into the session, hit mitts for a bit, grapple just a touch, work up a light sweat and then take a few minutes to talk to the media. Things were different at Tuesday's "WEC 52: Faber vs. Mizugaki" workouts in Las Vegas. A room full of media couldn't wait to see what a 135-pound Urijah Faber would bring to the session, and following a medium-intensity workout, the answer was clear: confidence, and a whole lot of speed.

Even in telling the story now, Eric Lawson thinks the whole thing is almost too coincidental. There he was, walking down a hallway of a building he had rarely been in on the University of California-Davis campus. He was close to finishing his economics degree, and he likely would soon be moving away to find his first job. Wrestling was just a memory. He had been a longtime practitioner of the sport, but he had stopped competing as a freshman at UC-Davis to concentrate on BMX racing. But, through acquaintances, he knew a guy on campus named Urijah Faber.
