Filed under: Sengoku, Welterweights, JapanSengoku Raiden Championship promoter World Victory Road unveiled "SRC Welterweight GP Series 2010", an eight-man welterweight tournament to get underway at SRC 13 with two quarterfinal matches on June 20th with the remaining two quarterfinal matches at SRC 14 in late August. As we have seen with Sengoku's other tournaments, rather than using fighters that are already established within the promotion, the tournament will be drawing from second tier promotions in Japan and abroad, ultimately leading to a welterweight title match in 2011.

One major Japanese mixed-martial-arts promotion will follow the lead of its North American counterparts. World Victory Road officials today announced fighters in their Sengoku event series will now compete in weight classes that adhere to the limits set forth in MMA's "unified rules." The changes go into effect for its next show, Sengoku Raiden Championships 13, which takes place June 20 in Tokyo, Japan.

The Japanese-based World Victory Road organization today announced the signing of Olympic silver medalist Hiroshi Izumi to its Sengoku event series. Although no debut date has been set, the 27-year-old Izumi is expected to make his anticipated professional MMA debut by year's end. The Japanese fighter won a silver medal in judo (in the 90-kilogram category) at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games after he was defeated by Georgia's Zurab Zviadauri.
